Almah’s son tops HK Sale

Posted 19 March 2017 at 15:45

A son of South African-bred Almah (Al Mufti) stepped into the limelight on Friday when setting a new record at the Hong Kong International Sale held at Sha Tin Racecourse.

By Hussonet, the Australian-bred three-year-old gelding, catalogued as Lot 16, was knocked down to Peter Lau for HK$10.5 million, which obliterated the previous record of HK$9 million set in 2012.

Almah proved herself a stayer of note in her native country when trained by Charles Laird, the highlight of her career a victory over male rivals in the Gr.2 J&B Reserve Stayers Handicap. Also placed in a string of graded stayers events, she was voted the champion female stayer in 2002 and was exported to Britain, where she scored three times over jumps.

Sent to Australia, she has to date produced four winners from five runners, one of which, the Weiho Marwing-trained four-year-old Sensible Lover (Good Journey), captured the Gr.3 Three Troikas and was second, beaten a length by Inara, in the Gr.1 L Jaffee Empress Club Stakes.

Almah was bred by Dr Marianne Thomson at her Ambiance Stud, from the Dancing Champ mare Jazz Champion. A modest one-time winner, she made her mark as a broodmare. Zambomba, an own brother to Almah, likewise was a stayer of note, winning the Gr.3 Caradoc Gold Cup, while Zambuca (Lundy’s Liability), claimed the Gr.2 Victory Moon Stakes and was Gr.2-placed in Dubai. Jazz Champion died in 2016 at the grand old age of 25.

“What a wonderful old mare she was,” Marianne reflected. “I have Almah’s two half-sisters at stud, Zada (Antonius Pius) and Zambomba’s own sister Juzztine.”

Almah was covered by High Chaparral’s Gr.1 winning son Free Eagle in 2016. - AvdB
