Smart Call off the mark

Posted 30 June 2018 at 14:46

Jessica Slack's champion Smart Call opened her Northern Hemisphere account with a comfortable victory in the Gr.3 Hoppings Stakes over the Newcastle all-weather.

A three-time Gr.1 winner in her native South Africa and third in the Gr.2 Middleton Stakes, the daughter of Ideal World took the 2000m race by a length and three-quarters. Always well positioned in fourth, she was momentarily short of a gap, but once it opened up before the furlong marker, she readily went to the front for her first Northern Hemisphere success.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Smart Call was making her ninth start since winning the Gr.1 Met in January 2016 from the high-class pair of Legal Eagle and Captain America. She had taken the Gr.1 Paddock Stakes before that and in May 2015 won the Gr.1 Woolavington 2000 from the Gr.1 SA Oaks scorer Pine Princess.

Smart Call, South Africa’s Champion Older Female and Middle Distance Horse of 2015/16, was bred by Mauritzfontein Stud out of Good Judgement, an unraced Horse Chestnut half-sister to the international campaigner and sire Greys Inn (Zabeel), winner of three Gr.1s in South Africa and the Gr.3 (then) Dubai City of Gold, each time sporting the black and yellow silks of the late Bridget Oppenheimer now being carried by her granddaughter Jessica Slack’s horses, which include Smart Call.
